This year’s JGANC Winter Shootout Classic Was A Display of Young Talent Under Challenging Conditions.

In a remarkable display of skill and resilience, the Junior Golf Association of Northern California’s (JGANC) Winter Shootout Classic, held on January 14th and 15th, 2024, at the prestigious MacKenzie Golf Course at Haggin Oaks, showcased some of the most promising young talents in the region. Despite mixed skies and chilly temperatures, the junior golfers demonstrated exceptional prowess, marking the event as a significant early-season tournament.

Boys Division: A Close Contest

The boys’ competition was a thrilling affair, with Akira Ransi from Folsom and Garrett Harrison both posting impressive 2-under par scores of 140, sharing the top honors. Ransi, consistent throughout, carded rounds of 70-70, while Harrison, showcasing his skill to recover, shot 71-69. Their performances set a high bar for the season.

Not far behind were Jacob Burnett from Roseville and Max Canny from Berkeley, who tied for third overall with even par scores of 142, after rounds of 72-70. Their steady play under the challenging weather conditions was commendable and indicative of their potential in the sport.

Girls Division: A Blistering Performance by Cathy Zhang

On the girls’ side, the tournament was highlighted by an outstanding performance from San Ramon’s Cathy Zhang. She fired rounds of 69-70, culminating in a first-place finish with a score of 139. Zhang’s display of skill, particularly in the cold conditions, was nothing short of remarkable.

Following closely was Sacramento’s Taylor Baker, who showed great determination and skill. Baker shot rounds of 73-68, finishing just two strokes behind Zhang. Her remarkable comeback in the second round captured the attention of the spectators and fellow competitors alike.
