Sacramento’s Recap: Qualifiers Round at the AJGA Championship at Haggin Oaks

Yesterday’s qualifiers round at the AJGA Championship at Haggin Oaks showcased the resilience and talent of young golfers from near and far.

California will have a strong showing throughout the qualifying and weekend long tournament with an impressive 63 participants, 8 of those golfers hailing from the Sacramento Region alone. This tournament is more than just a state affair; it is a true melting pot of talent, featuring competitors from across the United States and around the world. Among the diverse pool of participants were representatives from Oregon, Illinois, Arizona, and Nevada, and even international players from Canada, China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong.

Boys’ Division Highlights

Joseph Gutierrez, a local favorite hailing from Whittier, California, stole the show with an extraordinary performance, carding an impressive -4 (68) to claim the medalist title. His precision on the greens and unwavering focus left spectators in awe, setting the bar high for the days to come. Joining him in securing spots for the main event were Max Thomas from Rocklin, Trenton Stuart from Folsom, and Jonathan Chen from Carmel, all finishing strong at -1 (71). The leaderboard painted a picture of California dominance, with Jack Yu from San Marcos and Leo McDonough from Lafayette earning their spots with scores of E (72) and +2 (74) respectively.

Girls’ Division Highlights

In the girls’ division, Lana Yamagata of South Pasadena and Ashlee Xu from Mountain House shared the spotlight, both posting solid scores of +1 (73). While Xu chose to step back, Yamagata forged ahead, determined to make her mark on the tournament. The battle for qualifying spots was fierce, with Yeseo Yi from Valencia, California, securing her place with a score of +3 (75), and a nail-biting playoff deciding the final two spots.
