This alignment putter will improve the putting game for two-thirds of the golfers out there who simply don’t line up their putter properly. This putter also features a White Hot insert. If you haven’t seen it before, then be sure you put one in your hands and try it out soon. You won’t be disappointed in the results.

Outdoor Demo Day at Orange County National Golf Center

Today’s Agenda: Half of our team is headed to the Outdoor Demo Day at the National Golf Center today while the other half plans to attend the Association of Golf Merchandisers Retail Conference.

The Outdoor Demo Day: There are 200+ hitting bays out here on this 42-acre circular range, and I must say that the Orange County National practice facility is very impressive. No need to worry about hitting your ball into the stalls on the other side of the range – not even the long drive champions and PGA and LPGA Tour Players out here today can make it that far! This is the place to be today to test the hottest new golf equipment and accessories that will be out on the shelves in golf shops across the country this season. All major manufacturers are here, including PING, TaylorMade, Nike, Callaway, Titleist, Cleveland, Wilson, Mizuno and many, many more! – JM

PGA_123_20158:15pm – It’s Tom’s birthday. Celebrating the first of “many” birthday celebrations.- MY

PGAshow_123_17355:30pm – Some of the team broke off for “research” with a break to go play the mini golf courses at Disney World, they finished before the rest of the team and had a chance to explore Downtown Disney before our dinner reservations.  Stay tuned – we are exploring a putting course out by the driving range at Haggin Oaks this year – wouldn’t that be a fun addition?

PGAshow_123_17205:20PM – Would you wear this? I sure would. stylish and classic. – MY

Nike VRS Covert Driver10:40am – The new NIKE VRS Covert Driver is the first cavity back driver. It has increased ball speed on center and off-center hits. You can also adjust the loft and the face angle independently of each other which is a bit unique from the other drivers out on the market, although “adjustability” is the big move among all the major manufacturers this year. You will have the power to transform your club in your fingertips! – JM

PGAshow_123_103910:39am – Celebrity Sighting! – Ken Griffey, Jr. spotted in the NIKE Golf booth. – JM

Dead Aim Putters10:36am – The Dead Aim Putter features a removable laser device that snaps onto the putter.. The laser forces the player to putt while keeping the putter in the proper putting stroke. Most people don’t aim correctly – I heard anywhere from 67% – 80% of people don’t aim correctly as I wandered the range today. Most of these people aim right. This putter gets people to aim and retrains you with the proper putting stroke in a consistent fashion. For $199.99, you get the putter, the laser, a target and a headcover. I thought this was a pretty cool value. -JM

PGAshow_123_103010:30am – Mike is getting into the swing of things! Here he is trying a putter designed from MXV Golf. This putter is designed off Newton’s Cradel and features Center-Strike Technology. The putter promotes forward pressing and promotes hitting down into the ball. This is not something that Mike has considered before when it comes to putting as it is a more commonly considered theme for iron play. -JM

10:23am – OPGAshow_123_1023akley Golf was one of my first stops once I stepped off the bus and I checked out their super cool new CarbonPro golf shoe. According to Oakley, it is the lightest golf shoe on the market. According to Oakley, it is their “lightest, lowest, most advanced tour show ever” – JM

10:15am – The other half of the team arrives at the Outdoor Demo Day at the National Golf Center via bus. Our group includes Mike Woods, Tom Morton, Andrew Wilson, Don Pottle, and Roger Clark. This is my first time attending the Demo Day and I was surprised at how far the drive was to get to the range; however, the driving range at the Orange County National Golf Center is spectacular. It is massive in size and it is 360° – so you simply walk at your leisure around the entire circle.  Over 100 manufacturers were there with the latest golf equipment on hand. We saw Nike, Callaway, Titleist, PING, Mizuno, Wilson, TaylorMade, Cobra PUMA and more. Many of the manufacturers also brought PGA and/or LPGA Tour Professionals to do guest appearances or exhibitions throughout the day. There were also a handful of other athletes – I know that I saw Ken Griffey, Jr. in the NIKE booth which was very cool! ~JM

PGAshow_123_101210:12am – Here’s a picture showing our team that is attending the AGM Conference today. Let me point out the team (from left to right – Mike Pompei, George Steffes, Matt Young (kneeling), Heather Hadley, Bill Dixon, Marlene Kawaguchi, Cheri Morey, Ken Morton, Jr. – MK

PGAshow_123_100610:06am – Ken Morton, Jr., former President of the Association of Golf Merchandisers, spent his day at the AGM Conference today. They switched the format up this year and offered a Tour of Clubs. At 10:06am, their bus pulled into their first stop, the Waldorf Astoria Golf Club.

PGA Merchandise Show9:42am – The entire team (all fifteen of us) headed over in three minivans from our resort to the Convention Center where we split up. Matt captured us bright and early as we got ready to start our day. -MY

I play the prov’s and love them would dearly love to try the newest ball out on a couple rounds if they are as good as their brothers then they should be a great addition to any golfers arsenal in their bag .

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

From what I gathered at Titleist yesterday the new ball is an improvement from its big brother. Lower ball flight, lower spin rate (approximately 200-400 less), their softest feeling ball since the balata, and a more durable paint job/cover. They are shipping today so come and get them this weekend.

I’d like to see what Scratch Golf has at the show. I love their clubs. I also am happy to see Cleveland move away from the retro look on their drivers this year. That is just my preference, of course.

Ed, Scratch is about the only vendor we can think of that isn’t at this show. And Cleveland has a brand new all-black Cleveland Classic that is much more modern looking that ships in the next 30 days.

John, the concept is that it is 90 degree angles that work for alignment rather than the parallel lines. It is very effective. We have these in the store already. I’d encourage you to check them out.

Really great new putters. Want to hear your opinion on the Dead Aim Putter because they described my putting issue – hitting to the right perfectly – I thought I had ‘rightitis’. Will this putter cure my malady? Appreciate your thoughts.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Kathie…. Dead aim with help with your alignment a lot. If you are still pushing to the right you may want to visit with one of our golf pros or your instructor to make sure your putter is properly fit for you and to look at your stroke. There could be many factors attributing to your “rightitis”.

Have you discovered any stylish/youthful lines of ladies golf clothing that are also modestly priced? Paying $75+ for a skort is difficult to justify and yet if you dip below that price point the clothes tend to appear “frumpy”:=)

How about bringing some left handed equipment back with you? Even at your demo days it is hard to find clubs for a left hander to try. Also, if you got a box of left handed Pro V1’s you don’t want I would be happy to take them. Have a great time. Glen

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Glen, if we don’t have it in the shop be sure to ask our club fitting experts if we have it in the fitting studio. Usually we have all the options available in the fitting carts and can build some for you to try. Lefties need clubs too and we understand your challenges in finding the right equipment for your swing.

The ball is more durable, softer, and better spin rates. That should give you a ball that lasts longer, has more control, and longer. Feedback has been great at the show so far.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Two totally different clubs. Amp Cell Pro is almost a true blade. Great for shot shaping but little room for error. Rocketbladez are forgiving and provide good distance on the miss hits. You have to hit them both to see what’s right for you. Rocketbladez will have a tour model that some tour players are using which gives you a classic look and workability.

Wish I would have kept my golf clothes from the 70’s. Probably could sell them fro $$$. Seriously, leaving fro Myrtle next week and can’t wait to hit the courses and stores.

Awesome pics from the expo today. I would love to hit that new X Hot driver from Callaway. I’ve heard some really good things about it.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Got a chance to hit it myself. Great feel and seems to be longer than some of the competitors. Well worth the try because I know I liked everything about them.

Going on a golf outing this winter and really would like some new ProV 1’s. Love the bright new colors for the clothing…

Not that the range at Haggin needs any improvement BUT if there was one thing that it needed it would be the Range Servant. Hopefully they will be installed by the time you and your crew return.

I’ve always wanted to go to that show. Really appreciate you showing us all the new items and excitement that must be enjoyed by all the golf fans and followers of Morton golf.

Looks like a great show this year. Miss going to Haggin Oaks, now living in Ohio. I try to visit whenever I am in town, best store ever!!

I’d like to be golfing right now, but I’d LOVE to be at the PGA Merchandise show in Orlando right about now!

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

There are so many great shoes here at the show. We will be bringing only the best to our shop. There will be a style, fit, and comfort for everyone.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

With all the adjustable lofts and face angles I am positive that our club fitters can find a driver that will work for you. The best way is to get for or come hit them on our range so you can actually experience them and see the ball flight for yourself. I know there is something out there for you.

  33. Tripp Smith says: | Reply

Someone has a portable swing monitor for the range that verbally gives you your distance, etc.
Have you seen anything like this at the show?
    Thanks,
    Tripp

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

There are a few products out there that address what you are looking for. Check our technology center and talk with our staff. The Es12 may be right up your alley. It tracks your distances on every shot.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Belly putters are still around on tour through next year. There was still talk about having separate rules for amateurs and pros at the show. If you don’t play in tournaments and your golf partners don’t mind I think you won’t have any issues.

  34. Mid-Handicapper says: | Reply

So tell us what you really think… do the type of tees you use really make a difference? What about those “Brush Tees”?

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Tees are becoming more important with the ability to get precise data from all the launch monitors out there for every shot. The brush tee works well but I did not see them there presenting any concrete info. We brought back a lot of Totem tees to test for them. These could have been one of the more exciting products we found. Tge numbers spoke for themself.

      • Mid-Handicapper says: | Reply

You guys are soooo good! Not only a fun blog, but thoughtful in your responses! Thanks for bringing us such good entertainment and information! Will try the Totem tees this year!

I’ve blemished my “new-ish” Taylormade Roketbalz Driver and was wondering what you might recommend to clean it up? White-out, white nail polish, anything? Or just live with it’s not so new-ish look…

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

How bad is it? We clean our demos frequently but they still don’t get all the way back to that “brand new” look. Scratches or paint chips are not covered by warranty, however dents and cracks may get replaced by Taylormade. We can try to send it back for you. Usually they are covered for 2 years.

I wish I could be in Fla for the PGA news around the world of golf, very exciting news and pics about what we have to look forward to.I just hope they keep the prices comparable to the not so robust economy.Hit em long and straight.RED

I used to drive to your store from Tahoe City at least 4 times a year to buy equipment. Now I live in Lincoln and make it every month. When can I bet my hands on the new Taylor Made R-1 driver?

Great pictures of the ladies golf apparel Heather, thank you for scouting them out! I’m thrilled to see they’re a slimmer fit in vibrant colors….should be fun to see, and to be seen in:=)

Cool coverage! Nice shots. Wish I could be there. Bring us all back a souvenir! Get Trevino’s autograph on a hat for me!

I would rather David Leadbetter not help me improve my slice. But maybe one of the new Pro V1 golf balls will help me get ride of my slice. How is that for a shameless plug? ; )

Great daily coverage to keep everyone up to date…enjoy the fabulous colors that are available in women’s golf attire, especially the different styles that are now available. Your shop is the best in the Sacramento area for all kinds of golf paraphernalia. Keep it up.

On day 2 of the PGA Merchandise coverage, I think I am most excited about the custom Vokey wedges. You always see the pros with their custom Vokeys, now it appears the public will have the option to buy and customize the. SWEET!

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

We are going to try to bring the custom works options to our customers in a more accessible way. Be on the look out in the Super Shop or work with our club fitters to get yours ordered.

The women’s gloves and apparel are beautiful. If I didn’t spend all my money on my son’s golfing; I might take up the sport. Keep the great posts coming – nice shot of the back of Tom’s head. :)

Didn’t find stain proof white grips. I struggle with the same issue. A good old wipe down with soap and water will clean them up and give them new life. I try to do that every few rounds. Keeping a wet towel with you while you play and wiping down after each shot will help too.

Looks like Totem golf tees might be an addition to my bag. Was the use of the tool to putsh the tee in the ground awkward?

    • Bill says: | Reply

      Hi Todd,

Essentially the “tool” is a big tee that fits inside of the totem tee and you just push it into the ground like normal. Not as tough as I thought it might be…BD

I really like the Range Servant GPS you got have some practice areas with something like this
although I may not like knowing how short my ball really goes. Andy

We brought a bunch back and should have more soon. Come and pick up a sample and give us your feedback. Should have some in the store this week.

    • Bill says: | Reply

      Dave,

All we have seen are the numbers on the Trackman…and if they are accurate…using them could really add some yards to your drives. Proof will be in all of us hitting them ourselves. Doing our best to get them to come to our golf expo and/or get as many samples as possible to bring back for all of our customers to try…stay tuned! BD

Pro V1s…. great prize!!! But like they say, it’s not the arrows, it’s the Indians. Always hoping for some sharper arrows though.

How often do you recommend an occassional (one/week) golfer to regrip his clubs? And your thoughts about just gripping the most used ones rather than the whole set at once? Different feels result if we do that?

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Good question. With the proper care they can last a long time. If you are getting wear spots I definitely suggest replacing. My preference is to do all at once to keep the feel consistent. However that can get pricey, so I don’t see anything wrong with changing one at a time.

  53. Dan in Medina, Ohio says: | Reply

I think its only appropriate to post something on the day the 2013 ProV1s come out. Who knows? Maybe I’ll win a dozen of the balls. That would be as cool as your Show coverage.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Actually it is Lambda Golf… typo on our part. Check out there web site to get all their info, styles, and pricing. They are made of cow leather inside and out wth a weather protection membrane inbetween. For a classic high quality shoe they are really nice. Right now they are in a slight transition on their site because they are updating it.

Thanks again for all the coverage. Can’t wait to see what you find tomorrow. Also, what brand is that bike with a bag on the back. Not sure my course would allow it, but it would still be fun doing both.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

R1 feedback was positive. More adjustments than R11S, better lower spinning shaft, similar feel off the club face. Rocketbladez tour looked and felt great. If you want a smaller club head with good forgiveness this could be your club.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Adizero has good traction and unbelievably light weight. You are going to have to try them on to get the real experience. A few companies are going to have a light weight option where your feet feel free.

Titleist PRO V’s are the best ball on the market. As I perused all of your pictures on here I noticed that there is a tendency for a lot of loud, Neon colors…..Is it just me or is it so? Anyway, keep up the great work guys! Tremendous coverage.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

The bright colors are my style, but it is definitely more prevalent in more clothing lines than in previous years. You are going to see more golfers on tv sporting the brighter look. Bright colors are sure the trend today.

Do those Vibram shoes have spikes? I didn’t realize they made golf shoes. Regardless, I’m not sure I could wear those. I just can’t get past the look of those things.

    • Matt Young says: | Reply

Brian, no spikes on the Vibram shoes. I hit some shots with them on, they held just like my spikeless shoes and 5 of us got some to wear back home to provide them with feedback. I have worn them most of the day and the toes take some adjusting to. They are comfortable though.
