Robla School District Students Recieve the Help They Need to be Prepared for School

It was easy to say “YES” when the Optimist Club asked Morton Golf Foundation if they would be willing to help families of Robla School District in their Back to School Giveaway. Morton Golf Foundation is now in its second year of helping these families ease into another year ahead.

Robla School District has 6 schools in their area. The 6 schools and volunteers met at Robla Main Avenue Elementary School to make a difference on Saturday, August 5th, 2023. Roughly 40% of the students in this District are unhoused or in foster care. The Back to school giveaway is needed in this community and it makes a large impact

As the families entered the multi-purpose room at Robla Main Avenue Elementary School they were given a Passport. This passport was their Student ID for the day that allowed them to gather knowledge and goodies at several stations that were waiting for them. It started off with a School Nurse to discuss healthcare and moved on to include the library, oral care, and backpack stations just to name a few.

Morton Golf Foundation had several volunteers present and was honored to be included in this initiative.  At one point, a young man around 10 years old came to the event with shoes about four sizes too big.  They were two different shoes and they were both left shoes. At the Back to School Giveaway, he was able to receive his first new pair of shoes. The pure excitement and glee he shared with his Mom as he got “his first pair of new shoes” was heartwarming. After picking up their new PUMA shoes they then continued on to receive underwear and socks to complete the necessary items for their first day of school outfit.

If a family did speak English, then it was not an issue as they were still able to communicate their needs and have them fulfilled. Several of the families did not speak English and creative volunteers found ways around this barrier. A few of the Morton Golf Foundation volunteers, Carson & Heather Morton were very handy to use Google Translate to communicate and get the job done quickly.

There was a station at the Back to School Giveaway put on by the Mixed Institute of Cosmetology and Barber, they provided 12 Stylists. Students had access to trained professional stylists without taking a dime out of their pocket. Hopefully, this provided a memorable experience for the students while preparing them for their first day of school.

Students had an incentive to maximize their time by visiting each station, as they would be entered into a raffle. Every student that got their Passport stamped at each location could enter a raffle for a FREE bicycle donated by the Sacramento Police Department.

Coach Roz from Playmakers and Coach Asley Noda from First Tee – Greater Sacramento educated these students on physical activities that are available to them to keep them active and having “fun” throughout the year.

The goal of this event was that each student would leave better educated on healthcare and better prepared for the school year. We believe this goal was achieved by kind-hearted leaders in our community stepping up to help these families. As students left, they were sent off with a “to go” non-perishable box for future meals, provided by Food for Families.

This is a total community of leaders coming together to make a difference. Let’s continue to work to make their future even better.
