Haggin Oaks Visits the Titleist Ball Plant!

Inside the #1 Ball in Golf: A Visit to Titleist Ball Plant 3

As a member of the National Golf Buyers Association, we’ve been fortunate to visit some pretty incredible places in the golf world. But few experiences have impressed me as much as our recent visit to Titleist’s Ball Plant 3 in New Bedford, Massachusetts—home to the legendary Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

Before I go any further, let me just get this out of the way: yes, I had to sign an NDA. So if you’re here looking for some juicy trade secrets on what makes a Titleist ball spin more, fly farther, or feel softer—sorry, this won’t be that article. But if you’re curious about the intense level of precision, care, and engineering that goes into the ball you put in your bag, you just might find this fascinating.

Let’s start with some high-level facts that blew my mind. Titleist has been the #1 ball played at the U.S. Open for 76 straight years. That’s right—nearly eight decades of dominance. Even more incredible, nine of the top ten golf ball patent holders in the world work for Titleist, and they hold the first-ever patent for a launch monitor. They even created the first robotic golf ball tester. Titleist isn’t just a brand—they’re pioneers.

Walking through Ball Plant 3 felt like stepping into a hybrid world of cutting-edge aerospace engineering and classic American manufacturing. There are over 80 engineers—yes, engineers—who design and refine Titleist golf balls. Some of them are even aerospace engineers, bringing NASA-level precision to something you tee up on a Saturday morning.

Take the Pro V1x, for example. That little white sphere goes through 120 different steps and quality checks before it ever hits a shelf. Every single ball is touched, inspected, scanned, or measured dozens of times throughout the process. And while the Pro V1x may be considered a “premium” ball in terms of price, after seeing the sheer scale of investment and craftsmanship that goes into every single one, it honestly makes you wonder how they’re selling it for less than five bucks a ball.

What really hit me, though, was the deep-rooted heritage that Titleist holds onto. The story begins back in 1932 with Phil Young, a devoted amateur golfer and owner of a precision rubber molding company in Acushnet, Massachusetts. After missing a well-struck putt, Phil and his playing partner—who just so happened to be the head of the local hospital’s x-ray department—decided to x-ray the golf ball. What they discovered would change the game: the core was off-center.

That moment lit a fire in Phil. He committed himself to designing golf balls that were perfectly centered and produced to the highest quality standards imaginable. Fast forward 90+ years, and that same passion is still the lifeblood of Titleist.

While I can’t reveal the secrets behind the cover blends, dimple patterns, or curing processes, I can tell you this: if you ever get the chance to tour Ball Plant 3, take it. It’s part high-tech laboratory, part Willy Wonka factory for golf nerds, and 100% proof that excellence is never accidental.
