TFTGS Juniors Receive VIP Treatment at Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

TFTGS junior, Isamu Kawaguchi, recently travelled down to the beautiful Monterey Penninsula for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. These juniors were guests of The First Tee of Greater Sacramento and Chevron STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and the trip is one they won’t soon forget!

This was Isamu’s first big event and it got him really excited to play more golf this season. On the way to the Chevron STEM tent, the kids saw Rickie Fowler. (He’s in the background wearing bright green!)

Check out the inside of Chevron’s STEM Zone tent. Impressive!

Proving that science and sports are tied together, the tent explored concepts such as aerodynamics.

The board reads:
Aerodynamics
Explore [Thrust] vs. [Drag] and [Lift] vs. [Gravity] and see how they determine the flight of a golf ball.

Tools you’ll use:
Air cannon

The activity:
Launch spinning balls to determine the flight characteristics.

Concepts covered:
Velocity, lift, magnus effect

Discussing slope and acceleration.

They had a lovely patio overlooking the 4th hole for lunch.

Isamu is big on science and math so this was right up his alley.  Not only was this an educational trip but Isamu got to watch some of the great players of the game.   Tiger Woods, Ian Poulter, Rickie Fowler, Davis Love III, Rocco Mediate, Mike Weir, and Zach Johnson.

Isamu is still talking about how much fun he had.  What an impression it had on him!
