The #1 Mistake Most Golfers Make When Chipping

Are you sure your sand wedge is the right club for your swing?

Picture this: you’re playing a 390 yard par 4. You hit a great drive and follow up with a swing that puts you at a 20 yard chip away from the green. What club do you pull out of the bag? Most players default to their sand wedge, but that’s not always the best club to use.

For the majority of players, using your sand wedge in this situation is a no-brainer. However, there might be a different club better suited to your situation. Your sand wedge will fly high toward the target, but what if that’s not the most important thing you need?

A different club may require less of a backswing if you’re close to an obstruction, fly lower if you need to dodge branches, or be easier to control around the green. From pitching wedge down to your putter, you’ll start rolling your ball more and more. The sand wedge is definitely ol’ reliable but sometimes you need something more nuanced.

Next time you’re chipping around the practice green before your round, give some other clubs a try. You might find something you like!
