Blast From the Past: Basakwerd, the Backwards Putter

This unconventional putter connects hosel to toe, creating a reversed orientation when at address.

Over the years, there have been many experimental and downright strange golf products. We’re going back through our vaults and bringing you some of the weirdest products we could find, starting with the Orizaba Basakwerd.

Intended to provide a straighter and more stable impact to your short game, the Basakwerd was a very unconventional putter. Despite its funky appearance, it did garner some professional attention. Gene Littler and Johnny Miller used and won with it on the PGA Tour. Over 250,000 Basakwerds were sold during its lifetime, but its unconventional nature never caught on. It eventually went out of production and there’s never been anything quite like it since.

A two-page spread of a German magazine. On the left is an advertisement for paco rabanne cologne. On the right is an article about the Basakwerd putter with a picture of Johnny Miller using the Basakwerd. There are two black-and-white pictures at the bottom of the page showing the Basakwerd putter being used to demonstrate how it's backwards.
