At Haggin Oaks, green speed plays a big role in how the course challenges players. To keep things consistent and tournament-ready, our maintenance team uses a Stimp Meter to monitor green speeds throughout the week.
What’s a Stimp Meter?
A Stimp Meter measures how far a golf ball rolls on the green. The farther it rolls, the faster the green. Readings are taken by rolling golf balls across a level surface and averaging the distance. According to the USGA:
Slow: under 8 ft
Medium: 8–10 ft
Fast: 10–12 ft
Very Fast: 12+ ft
What Speeds Can You Expect?
Tournament Days: Greens roll between 10–11 feet, offering a quick, challenging surface for competitive play.
Everyday Play: Speeds average around 9–10 feet, giving public golfers a fast but fair putting experience.
How We Keep Greens Consistent
Our team regularly takes Stimp readings on multiple greens while also adjusting mowing height and rolling to control speed. This process ensures every green offers a smooth and consistent pace for everyone.
Whether you’re playing a tournament round or a casual round with us, we believe you’re playing on some of the best course conditions in Sacramento.
