Think small, not the mall. That’s the message from American Express this holiday season.
Earlier this week, the credit card company launched Small Business Saturday, (think Black Friday and Cyber Monday), a promotion designed to boost sales at local businesses- including the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex- on November 27th and throughout the holiday shopping season.
Campaigns on Facebook and Twitter are helping raise consumer awareness about the effort — and the importance of supporting small businesses.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there were nearly 28 million small businesses in the United States last year. Over the past two decades, small businesses created 65 percent of net new jobs. Small business advocacy group The 3/50 project says for every $100 spent in locally-owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures.
Acting local could put some cash back into your wallet as well. Be one of the first 100,000 American Express members to register at Facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday and use your card for purchases of $25 or more at any locally-owned, independent, small businesses on Nov. 27. If you do, you’ll receive a $25 statement credit.
