Golf Apps Uncovered

Do you have a smart-phone? Do you have any golf apps on your phone? If you do, then we want to hear about them- what are your favorites and how would you rate them?

Recently, my friend forwarded me a link for the new Tiger Woods: My Swing app by Shotzoom Software which is available on iTunes for $9.99. This app claims to help “golfers of all levels improve their golf swing through video analysis and instruction from golf great Tiger Woods.” It has gotten pretty good reviews from customers and currently has 4 1/2 stars. Mutadayen, a recent reviewer, gave this app a 5-star rating and wrote, “In all honesty, I initially bought because I’m a Tiger fan but after going through, I can honestly say this was worth every penny. This is my 5th year playing golf as I got started late and am taking lessons now, and trusting what the instructor tells you is hard to do, but when you can see the lessons you learn are the same things that tiger and other pros do…well, it builds a great of confidence in what you’re trying to do. From questioning ball position to rotation to hand movements, everything that I’m learning I can watch in slow motion here, compare, and adjust. To me, it’s just like having your own personal coach with you at all times…!”

That is a pretty good review and there are many more available online that sing the praises of the Tiger Woods: My Swing app. I’ll admit that I haven’t personally tried it as I can’t seem to pry myself away from Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies and DoodleJump. On the plus side, I can definitely see where one would find good use for this app when at the driving range practicing one shot after another, but do you really think it is more effective using an app than hiring a trained golf instructor who will work one-on-one with you, evaluating your game and giving you individualized advice?  Perhaps that isn’t the intent of this app – and if it will help shave a couple of strokes off my game or provide me with some entertainment at the golf course, then I say it is money well spent! However, if you decide to work on your game the old-fashioned way, call us at 916-808-2531 and schedule an appointment with a real live golf instructor who will definitely help your game!
