Jack’s Caring Gesture: The Story Behind the Yellow Shirt

Morton Golf received this message from Tony Pando from Nicklaus Golf earlier today and it is definitely a story worth sharing with our readers.  This story brought tears to my eyes and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

As we continue to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus’ historic and iconic victory at the 1986 Masters—a commemoration with highlights that have included Jack unveiling a replica of the 1986 Response putter during Wednesday’s Par 3 Contest, to the Jack Nicklaus II-narrated ESPN film “Yes Sir! Jack Nicklaus and the 1986 Masters,” to the Golden Bear blasting the new, award-winning Nicklaus ML4 driver yesterday on the first tee of Augusta National to open the 2011 Masters Tournament—we get to share in a little-known story about 1986.

If you ever wondered if Jack’s decision to wear yellow on that dramatic Sunday in ’86 was by design or mere happenstance, there is an answer. ESPN will beautifully tell that story in a feature to air during the network’s weekend coverage (likely SportsCenter) of the Masters. For now, however, we share with you an essay written by ESPN The Magazine’s talented Wright Thompson and one narrated by Harry Connick Jr.

Below you will find a link to the video and a note from Wright.

Enjoy! ~Tony Pando
