Marlene Kawaguchi – Men’s and Junior Apparel Buyer / Soft Goods Sales Manager

HO_MarleneKawaguchi_Buyer_1000I’m proud to say that I have been working at Haggin Oaks for over 10 years and can’t imagine working at a place that I love more. I started in 2004 as a Starter/Cashier in the Haggin Oaks Pro Shop and have performed various roles, including Sales Associate, Merchandiser, Store Manager, and Apparel/Footwear Buyer for the Haggin Oaks Golf Super Shop. My current role is, in my opinion, the perfect job for me. I’m the buyer for Men’s and Junior apparel and I’m also the Soft Goods Sales Manager. I have the opportunity to work directly with the sales staff to coach and educate, listen to our customers’ wants and needs, and then I have to ability to act on their requests. That cycle of buying a product with our customer in mind, merchandising it, and then seeing it sell is always a rush for me.

My retail experience started in 1989 when Nordstrom arrived in Sacramento. I was hired as a salesperson and quickly worked my way into management. I managed a few departments, including Children’s, POV, and The Rail (young men’s) where I spent most of my time. I also opened the Nordstrom Rack, at How Bout’Arden, overseeing the Men’s department which broadened my knowledge of men’s apparel. I have found that my experience at Nordstrom has given me the tools to be an effective manager and buyer for Morton Golf. I was taught the importance of merchandising, building lasting relationships with customers, and of course, great customer service. These are the 3 things that I work on every day in the hopes to give you, our customer, a great experience in our Haggin Oaks Golf Super Shop.

Although 10 years at Nordstrom taught me well in the ways of customer service, I feel like my time here has been my best learning years yet. I’m surrounded by a powerful management team who coach me in business and in life, four other knowledgeable and tenured buyers who help and support me in my decisions, and an experienced sales team who inspire me to be a better manager. I am always learning and given the tools to do so.

Side notes:

I’ve won two awards as a member of the Haggin Oaks team: “Most Inspirational” voted by my peers and when I was a merchandiser, I won the “Best in Country” award from Titleist for a NXT ball display. The Titleist award included a trip to St. Andrews in Scotland….very cool.

I’ve been playing golf since I was 12, thanks to my Grandaddy. I have two beautiful children. I have a twin. I’m an optimist by nature. I’m a fan of Team Will, St.Jude, Bloodsource, and the Morton Golf Foundation. My hobbies are work, golf, and anything outdoors (when it’s warm only). I live in East Sac! I am grateful for my village of amazing friends. Life is good.
