Five Stages of Golf Development

These stages are meant to explain an athlete’s advancement through a pathway supporting a healthy golf experience based on their physical, mental, and emotional level and potential for growth.

STAGE 1: Discover, Learn, and Play (Age:0-12)

Development Focus: 

  • Fun, Games, and Play
  • Agility, Balance, Coordination (Basic Fundamental Movements)
  • Station Based Practices

Programming Opportunities at this Stage:

STAGE 2: Develop and Challenge (Age:10-16)

Development Focus:

  • Fun, Basic Fundamentals, and Playing the Game
  • Rules & Etiquette
  • Agility, Balance, and Speed

Coaching Focus:

  • Social/Fun
  • Technical (Skills) Focus for Evaluation
  • Reinforce Basic Concepts
  • Station Based Practices

Programming Opportunities at this Stage:

STAGE 3 : Train and Compete (Age:13-19)

Development Focus:

  • Fun, Playing the Game, and Mastery
  • Speed, Strength, and Power
  • Mental Tips and Basics

Coaching Focus:

  • Fun
  • Tactical (Game Play & Decision Making) Focus for Evaluation
  • Reinforce Concepts
  • Emphasize Training and Competition Preparation

Programming Opportunities at this Stage:

STAGE 4: Participate and Succeed (Age 15+) Participate & Succeed (High School/Junior Varsity)

Development Focus:

  • Overall Game Development and Personal Focus on Development
  • Strength and Conditioning In-Season
  • Mental Tips and Development

Coaching Focus:

  • Technical, Tactical, Mental, and Physical Evaluation
  • Involvement/Commitment from Player
  • Training and Competition Preparation

STAGE 4: Excel for High Performance (Age:15+) High School/Varsity

Development Focus:

  • Overall Game and Personal Mastery is the Focus
  • Strength and Conditioning In-Season and Off-Season Expectation
  • Mental Development Focus
  • Leadership Development Focus

Coaching Focus:

  • Technical, Tactical, Mental, and Physical Evaluation
  • Program Maximization for Performance
  • Higher Level Competition
