“The learning experience should be educational and fun at the same time”
Matt Young is one of the newest additions to the Haggin Oaks team of professionals. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Matt comes from a family of avid golfers and has always lived an active lifestyle. In his youth he competed In multiple sports and many junior golf programs, tournaments and amateur events, He was recognized as the Scholar Athlete of the Year at James Logan High School in Union City earning 6 Varsity letters in four years, 2 for basketball and 4 for golf.
During his freshman year at UC Santa Barbara, Matt attempted to walk on to the golf team but missed the final cut. He put away his clubs for a while and would play golf only a few times a year. During his time away at college, Matt worked on campus as a Resident Assistant. He developed a strong passion for mentoring and teaching others and eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.
After graduating, Matt returned to the Bay Area and was working towards becoming a certified personal trainer. He enjoyed seeing his clients reach their goals, but his love for golf pulled him back to the game. He began his golf career in the bag room at Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club and was determined to work his way up quickly. Matt worked hard to improve his game and was given the opportunity to move into the golf shop after a short period of time. Within a few weeks Matt passed the PGA of America’s Playing Ability Test and became a Level 1 PGA Apprentice. As an Assistant Professional he played a major role teaching juniors golf camps, adult clinics, and individual lessons. Matt also led all of the womens events and tournament development. With the birth of his daughter in 2008, Matt decided to pursue another career but quickly realized his true passion was with golf. As the Head Coach of the Menio High School Golf Team in 2009, Matt led his players to a CCS berth.
After moving his family to the greater Sacramento area, Matt has found a new home at Haggin Oaks. The combination of his passion for helping others, health and fitness background, and extensive experience teaching golfers of all abilities makes him a great addition to the team of professionals. Matt believes that golf is a game that teaches many life lessons and he focuses on making the learning experience educational and fun at the same time.
