Two Putting Drills to help you Practice with a Purpose by Calvin Carpenter

Watch Calvin Carpenter, Teaching Professional at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex for the tip of the week!

One of Calvin’s favorite putting drills is to work on those short 3 foot putts. Start by chalking a line about 3 feet long. He used chalk, but you can use spray paint or string. If you use string just make sure it is high enough that it won’t get in the way of your putter. The ball and putter should stay on the line until the ball hits the back of the cup. This drill helps keep your putter square throughout the putts and makes sure you are aimed correctly with a good stroke.  Practice this drill often until you feel confident standing over the ball.

Another great putting drill is for lag putting. Take a few practice swings while looking at the hole. If it was a normal putt you would look down at the ball and then hit your ball. But for this drill continue to look at the hole while hitting your ball. This drill helps with your hand and eye coordination while gauging the speed of putts.

CalvinCarpenter_150Calvin is currently enrolled in the PGA of America’s program to become a certified instructor. He enjoys teaching the game of golf and watching the transformation of his players, but above all, he believes that no matter what someone is doing, that it should first and foremost, be fun. No matter what level the player is at, it all starts with basic fundamentals. Golf starts from the ground up and it’s important to build a solid foundation: Grip, Stance, and Posture. It is Calvin’s belief that through drills and through proper practice, players can build a more consistent swing by improving their movement patterns. It’s important for the student to understand what is causing them to do something wrong so they can take the necessary steps to fix it. It does not matter if you are a beginner or a professional, golf should always be fun.
