25-Time PGA Tour Winner & World Golf Hall of Famer Johnny Miller Scheduled to Appear

Zero Friction Performance Golf Gloves and Haggin Oaks are thrilled to bring Johnny Miller to the Haggin Oaks Golf Expo for a rare opportunity to hear this legendary PGA TOUR Player discuss his career, teaching philosophies and the upcoming PGA TOUR Safeway Open that will be held at the Silverado Resort and Spa October 10-16, 2016.

Winning the 1964 U.S. Junior Amateur jump-started Johnny Miller’s impressive career, which began professionally in 1969.  Miller’s 25 PGA Tour wins put him in the top 25 of all time.  His career wins also include two Majors in the 1973 U.S. Open and 1976 (British) Open Championship.  In his U.S. Open victory at the Oakmont Country Club, Miller erupted in the final round to shoot 63, the lowest ever in a U.S. Open and one of the greatest rounds of golf ever played. In 1974, Miller topped the Tour money list and attained PGA Tour Player of the Year status.  He was officially inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1996.  Upon retirement from professional play, Miller transitioned from the tee box to the media booth.  As a broadcaster for NBC Sports, he has become known for his candid commentary, and is regarded by many in the business as one of the few personalities who can attract viewers to a broadcast.

Miller will appear at the Haggin Oaks Golf Expo for a FREE Q&A Session with ESPN 1320 Golf-To-Go host Frank LaRosa at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 30 followed by a quick ½ hour lesson and tip session designed for local junior golfers and The First Tee program kids at 2:00 pm.

Miller has recently partnered with Zero Friction. The Zero Friction Universal Compression-Fit Gloves have revolutionized the sports industry and game of golf through a proprietary design invented to mold to the player’s hand for a better fit.  These innovative gloves stretch and compress to each hand for a snug and personalized fit, eliminating the friction caused from a loose or overstretched glove.  This allows for greater feel, comfort and shot accuracy.

The PGA TOUR recently announced that Safeway is the new title sponsor of the Safeway Open, formerly known as the Frys.com Open. The five year agreement runs through 2020 with the PGA TOUR event remaining at Silverado Resort and Spa for the duration.  The event will be held this year October 10-16, 2016.
The Safeway Open dates back to 2007, with the event moving from Corde Valle Golf Club in San Martin to Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa in 2014. With its present location, the event has become a popular stop for players, their families and fans, a credit to the allure of the Napa Valley and Silverado Resort and Spa. The tournament will continue to bring top PGA TOUR competition to Northern California and further its charitable and economic efforts in the local community, thanks to the long-term commitment of Safeway and World Golf Hall of Fame member Johnny Miller, partner of Silverado Resort and Spa.

“We are delighted to have Safeway involved with the PGA TOUR starting in 2016,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. “We have had a tremendous partnership with Albertsons, Safeway’s parent company, on the Web.com Tour, with the Albertsons Boise Open generating more than $1 million for local charities each of the last nine years. The Safeway Open will have a similar model in place to help build on what is already a well-established event in Napa.

Silverado Resort and Spa hosted the PGA TOUR from 1968-80, producing a prestigious list of winners including Jack Nicklaus (1969), Ben Crenshaw (1980), Tom Watson (1978) and two-time winner and tournament host, Johnny Miller (1974-75). In addition, Silverado was a Champions Tour venue from 1989-2002.

“This is great news,” said Johnny Miller, the 2014 tournament honoree. “A big thanks to Bob Miller and Safeway for their commitment to keep this wonderful PGA TOUR golf tradition going in Napa. I am thrilled the tournament will remain at Silverado where I lived for many years with my family on the North course and have developed so many special life-long friends and memories.”
